The Real R&B
R&B, originally known as rhythm and blues,
started in the 1960s and has grown bigger through the years. Solo artist and
groups considered themselves R&B and have stuck to the soulful and smooth
lyrics. Many say that R&B artist make music that is too sexual, but when
famous artist sing, they don't degrade women and they speak of sex in a
beautiful way. For example, Solo artists like Marvin Gaye was a top R&B
artist for the music he created. One of his top songs "Sexual
Healing" was number 1 on the Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart. Even
though it may be referring to having a sexual feeling with a woman, it still
brought hundreds of people to listen and fall in love with his music. His music
is so popular in the R&B world that alternative artist have used Marvin Gaye's
music as their own. Marvin Gaye made a top hit song called "Let's Get It
On" which is a song to set the perfect mood if you’re trying to have a fun
and romantic night with your partner. "Marvin Gaye" by Charlie Puth ft.
Meghan Trainor, created a song putting his name and some of his lyrics such as
"let's get it on" as part of their alternative song.
Another great R&B singer that impacted
people was Keith Sweat. One of his top hit songs "Nobody", is a
perfect example of referring to women or having sexual thoughts in a beautiful
and respectful way. There are many solo R&B artists that have made a
difference and stick to what is real soulful music. An artist like this is Stevie
Wonder, who was born premature and had a disease that caused him to go blind,
but still made some of the best R&B music that people still enjoy. Also we
have Kenneth Brian Edmonds aka Babyface, who's produced over 26 number-one
R&B hits over his career and has won 11 Grammy Awards. With the
contributions on these legends, it helped make R&B so popular. On the other
side, R&B also has groups that create some of the best sounds heard.
Boyz ii Men |
One very popular group that most people have heard or recognize instantly
when they come on is Boyz || Men. They are a group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
who are best known for their cappella harmonies. Their music has been heard all
over the world and they have been winning awards since the early 1990’s. Some
of their music goes into the category of being sexual. One top hit is “I’ll
Make Love to You” which shows how they are going to make sweet love just
like a woman wants to. Another top R&B group is New Edition, a group of 5
childhood friends from Boston who joined together to make soulful R&B music.
Their top hits were “Candy Girl”, “Cool it Now”, “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Can
You Stand the Rain”. All major hits that fans fell in love with because
they were young kids that brought different music in the 80’s. New Edition was
a top hit group but then one member was kicked out and he went through a solo
career. Bobby Brown left New Edition and he ended up taking his career to a
whole new level. Bobby Brown came out of the gates with new and amazing music
like “Every Little Step” and “My Prerogative” that made him known as the King
of R&B. His solo career made him as big as his ex group New Edition or even
bigger. Especially when Bobby Brown established a relationship with R&B
sensation Whitney Houston. Her voice was one of a kind, and she would make your
jaw drop just listening and seeing her perform with such passion.
