Popular 'Pop' Music

Popular music, or more commonly known as ‘pop’ music, has been around for centuries.  However, uniquely enough, this popular music has been identified primarily under the genre many recognize as rock. These two terms for music were used interchangeably until the 60’s when they became styles in competition with  each other. Since Pop music has become its own genre altogether, what does a song need to be considered a pop song? Do these characteristics differ greatly from the other genres or songs that would appear to be similar but are not?

These are a few of the pressing questions that some might be curious about but may not necessarily express openly. According to some definitions of pop music, this genre claims to appeal to a general audience rather than a particular ‘sub-culture’ pertaining mostly to craftsmanship rather than common “artistic” qualities. With this in mind, it is easier to categorize music and artists.
Taylor Swift with ZAYNE
Speaking of artists, when two combine their talents to produce one song, the final product is phenomenal.  This certainly the case with ZAYNE and Taylor Swift’s new song for the upcoming sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. They have moved up the charts to number 2 in the Top 100 with their song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever”. This is a big boost for their careers because this movie already has so much hype surrounding it, and having these top artists involved in the music makes it all the more exciting.
Ed Sheeran

Right below them at number 3 is Ed Sheeran with his new hit “Shape of You.” Sheeran claims that this exhilarating song was written with Rihanna in mind and just for fun, with no intentions of releasing it on his new album. However, it found its way there and instantly became a hit, with 227,000 copies sold within the first week!

Camila Cabello
While some artists join together to produce hits, others go solo and make it big. Such is the case with Camila Cabello, previously from 5th Harmony, and her song “Bad Things” featuring Machine Gun Kelly. In late 2016 she decided she wanted to go solo and hired her own manager to aid in this process. Though good for her, it was devastating for the other four harmonizers whose record labels are not on the straight and narrow any longer. Much confusion is still revolving around these problems, reasonably so. In the midst of the confusion and chaos, “Bad Things” remains on the Top 100 charts at number 5.

So far this month, pop music has jumped off the charts. Going along with the Pop post this week, I’ve included a playlist including these Pop hits. Be sure to check out these songs as they are what everyone is listening to lately!!
